Cary Judd stopped by the house and we got to hang out, cook and even record an interview. This show's all Cary lineup:

  • "Eclipse"
  • "Perfect Tonight"
  • "Push Comes to Shove"
  • "The Lights are Always On"
I was extremely fortunate to have Cary staying at the house and that he would do this interview. And he has a good recipe for cookies. You have to check his site, www.caryjudd.com or his MySpiggidy, www.myspace.com/caryjudd, to see when he is coming to your town.

And pick up his albums either from his website, at a show, or via the ever-popular-with-the-kids iTunes.

Album art for DeFi Radio

31

Its a Best of DFR Show! And we kick it off right with a brand new song from The Shins. Here is the lineup:

I hope everyone is nejoying their holidays! :)

The Shins - "Phantom Limb"

Off of their new CD, Wincing the Night Away, "Phantom Limb" was a must play on the show. No questions.

Wincing the Night Away is due to hit 23 January 2007 but you can pre-order it now at SubPop.com. Based on their two previous full-length releases their third is a shoe-in to keep you loving The Shins.

Subpop is doing something really cool if you buy the LP (thats vinyl or record to you younger listeners). Starting in 2007 any Subpop LP you buy comes with a coupon that allows you to download the entire album in mp3 format. Kind of reminds me of MP3.com when it created its partnership with CDNow.com back in the 1990s. Pretty cool and I wish we'd see more of this fomr other labels. FInd out all the deets here.

Halloween, Alaska - "Call it Clear"

First aired on on DeFi Radio 14.
Call it Clear From their self-titled debut album that was first released in 2003 comes this hipnotizing song. Fans of Fox's The O.C. might recognize two tracks on that album, "Des Moines" and "All the Arms Around You." I felt that "Call it Clear" needed some attention as well. =) Huge thanks to Michele Delfino, Halloween, Alaska, and the entire East Side Label Group! You can hear more at their Myspace site: www.myspace.com/halloweenalaska.

The Rewinds - "Sentimental Flaw"

Spun on DeFi Radio 11, this song is what hooked me, and hopefully all of you, on The Rewinds. Head over to their website and pick up their album. It will not disappoint.

Dylan in the Movies - "August Moon."

Played on DeFi Radio 15.

Another excellent track from the forth-coming CD Feel the Pull. Dylan in the Movies was able to tap the vocal talents of Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses, Breeders, Belly) for "August Moon" and last episode's "Better Days." No stranger to the public (music from Brian Sullivan's first solo CD Don't Postpone Joy was featured in the WB's Dawson's Creek and Summerland), Brian Sullivan, along with an ever-changing cast of characters, aims to pull you in with their rising and falling orchestral arrangements and poetic lyrics.

Hear more of their tracks over at the MySpace site: www.myspace.com/dylaninthemovies

Chad VanGaalen - "Clinically Dead"

DeFi Radio first-played episode: 16

From Chad's first full-length, Infiniheart, "Clinically Dead" is the opening track. And trust us. It only gets better from there.

You can also find out more about him at flemisheye.com

Chad VanGaalen - "Flower Gardens"

From his latest album, Skelliconnection, Flower Gardens is the title track. Fresh off of Infiniheart, Chad gives us more great music that only he can crank out. Pushing the boundaries of is instruments is a likely phrase that one might read in some fancy music review magazine article.

At any rate, get Skelliconnection from Subpop or in iTunes.

In fact, maybe if enough of us send them messages asking to be able to buy all 3 eps in some specially-priced deal, you could score their entire catalogue (which i personally celebrate) for an irresistible bargain. Just throwing that out there.

Canada once again invades the DeFi Radio show. What is that, like the past 10 episodes? They truly are the friendly neighbor to the north.

I was trying to find a link on their website so you could snag the CD. I've sent an email but for now, you can purchase their self-titled album from iTunes. Don't forget to burn an audio CD for your records and to back up all your purchased tracks to CD or DVD. Just to be safe. :)

Thats it for now. Enjoy the music, stay warm, we love all of you, all the bands, all the labels, and especially we love LibSyn for rockin so consistently. The all rule over there.

Drowaton CD link
From their label:

On drowaton the Starlight Mints paint from a broad sonic palate. Church bells, horns, violin, and synths complement the guitar, bass, and drums. The blend of classic strings, cheeky vocals, catchy melody and ornate surrealism is a pleasure. Packed with hooks, drowaton goes down easy.

Under Electric Light - "Night Out"
UEL Blue EP
Discovered by DeFi Radio's own Ben Taylor, UEL has produced their fourth EP in as many years. Each CD has been better than its predecesor and Blue EP is no different.

You can listen to some tracks over at their MySpace page, which is myspace.com/underelectriclight. You can also purchase their tracks at Bltrack.ca.

Pick up their EPs. Huge things are headed UEL's way and you can get hipster cred before everyone else! :)

What Made Milwaukee Famous - "Sweet Lady"
Tring to Never Catchup Cover
Lighting up the Austin, Texas music scene many times at South by Southwest, WMMF has tremendous buzz about them.

For example, did you know they played on PBS' Austin City Limits show? Did you know they shared it with Franz Ferdinand? This makes WMMF one of just a few unsigned bands to be on that show?

"Sweet Lady" is from their first album on Barsuk records, Trying to Never Catch Up available August 22, 2006.

So you know what to do now right? Great. Go sign up to be notified when you can pre-order the CD.

Band of Horses - "The Great Salt Lake"
Everything All the Time
Seattle, Washington's Band of Horses is comprised of Ben Bridwell and Matt Brooke.

Having played together for over a decade, Band of Horses is the fruit of Bridwell and Brooke's past endeavours, most notable is their sad pop outfit, Carissa's Wierd

Catch Band of Horses touring with Chad VanGaalen starting in August 2006. Keep up with their latest tour dates at SubPop's tour page.

Pick up Everything All the Time in iTunes or over at SubPop.

Rogue Wave - "Endless Shovel"
Buy Descended Like Vultures
From their second full-length album since joining up with SubPop Records, "Endless Shovel" is proof that there is something to keep you guessing. Each song has a little surprise in it. Nothing that would keep you from listening, just a little something to remind this is not crappy FM radio bubble gum.

Grab Descended Like Vultures in iTunes or at SubPop Records.

Special thanks to Barsuk Records for their support of podcasting and for signing amazing bands. Please take a moment to thank them by purchasing a CD or some merch.

Thanks to Amanda and Anna for hanging out in the "studio."

And the biggest thanks goes to all of you that listen and all the bands that believe in podcasting's power to help promote great music. Its all of you that really make music great again.

See you soon!

Get Him Eat Him - "Exposure"

Get the MP3 but really, get the show automatically via the RSS feed.

Mike Davis, Mike Droz and Sergio Aponte from Prime Meridian INDependent join me to bring you four more great tracks. Let's see whats rocking that stuff your skull protects.

BirdmonsterBirdmonster - "Resurrection Song"

From the upcoming, self-titled EP comes this great track. What's it sound like? Well Mike Droz says it sounds like The Pixies meets Modest Mouse meets Franz Ferdinand. I agree.

Its a good thing because it gets you nodding your head, tapping your foot, and turning your volume up.

The EP is available for purchase two ways:

1)CDBaby
2)If you're impatient (like me) buy them in iTunes.
Hard FiHard Fi - "Cash Machine"

From the their latest CD, Stars of CCTV, "Cash Machine" is a great beginning to a CD that just doesn't stop until you take the headphones off or your CD player blows up.

Influences include The Rolling Stones, The Specials, Massive Attack, and The Clash. All of these are subtely worked into Hard-Fi's recordings. It might take a few listens, but you will certainly hear it.

Pick up the CD, Stars of CCTV here.
The RewindsThe Rewinds - "California Sun"

One of my top 5 favorite bands (if not THE favorite) that I've played on DFR, The Rewinds have sent their first CD off to be mastered and it should be available very soon. You might remember The Rewinds from DFR 12.

Keep checking their website at TheRewinds.com for news about when the new CD will be available and for tour dates. Catch them live if you can. And tell them you heard them on DeFi Radio.

You can buy "California Sun" and five other tracks by The Rewinds in iTunes.
Get Him Eat HimGet Him Eat Him - "Exposure"

Get Him Eat Him is an eclectic group of five young men from Providence, Rhode Island. Their creativity and energy are too big for Rhode Island to contain so expect to see them touring more. Trust me, its only a matter of time.

"Exposure" comes from their latest CD, Do As I Tell on Catbird Records. The CD is currently sold out but I'm sure there will be more copies available very soon.

And don't forget to visit their website at GetHimEatHim.com for news and pictures. Also check out their very informative Sammiches blog.

You can find their 2005 release, Geography Cones in iTunes.

Hope you kids enjoy this episode. We're hard at work finding more great music for number 25 and 26. If you want to submit some music, just send it to defiradio at gmail dot com. Of course you can send feedback there as well.

As always thanks for listening, please fill out the survey, stay tuned, and we'll see you soon! :)

Sadly, Joe passed away December 22, 2002 but he still lives through his music. Anything by The Clash is a necessity as are the Joe Strummer albums. The energy and political undertones are still relevant and I have a feeling will be an appicable commentary for generations to come regardless of if you agree with them or not.

And as a fan of great music, you must pick up Streetcore at the very least.

Yes, I am still on the crappy mic. But that doesn't keep us from giving you more great music! Want all the details? Of course you do, so here goes:

Rogue Wave CD coverRogue Wave - "Publish My Love"

On the Descended Like Vultures CD, Rogue Wave shows that you don't have to conform to get records sold. If you've seen the move Just Friends you have heard one of Rogue Wave's songs. This is not that "Eyes" but is more support for why you should buy the latest Rogue Wave CD. You do things differently, especially since you listen to podcasts, so shouldn't your music? We thought so :)

Rogue Wave is on SubPop Records

Picture of VederaVedera - "Lover's Lie"

Having to undergo a name change just a few days ago, Vedera is back on De-Fi Radio. The were on as Veda but the name doesn't matter. This quartet proves that when it comes to great music, names don't mean a thing.

Off of their Weight of an Empty Room full length CD, "Lover's Lie" shows off the ability lead singer Kristen May has to make you think she's singing right to you. "Did you know, when you move i breathe?" she implores and you can't help but feel a little upset and awed. Scrape together US$12 and grab this CD so you can say "Vedera? Oh i knew about them waaaaaay before they played the Super NFL Game."

Vedera is on Second Nature Recordings

Picture of Jamie ShieldsJamie Shields - "So Sweetly"

From her demo CD Blueprints, "So Sweetly" features Jamie's sweet, romantic voice pleading for that one last something before its all over. It makes you rethink (or worse, drunk dial) past relationships. Just ask Ben. He did. And he won't stop calling me. Good crap he's calling me now. I'm getting a new number.

Sounding so sweet and almost sad, Jamie later shows that she's been pissed off and isn't going to take it and then reverts to the "Just give me one last..." plea that undertones the song. You must get this EP. Online orders are disabled right now, but you can pay by alternate methods by sending an e-mail to orders@jamiemusic.com. 6 great songs for US$5.99. Not a penny wasted, we say.

Picture of Katie DavisKatie Davis - "Los Angeles"

Katie describes her music as sad girl rock but i like to think of it as "her side of the story." Haven't you ever wondered how the other person was feeling or what they were thinking during those little romantic moments you've shared? Katie's "Los Angeles" helps to shed some light on that. If you want the full story, you'll have to get her EP Terrible, Terrible for just US$7. That includes shipping :)

I'm still using the crappy headset mic because i do not have my cables for my mixer. They will be here soon and it will be back to normal, i promise!! :)

Yes its been entirely too long. This show:

Under Electric Light - "Never See the Light"
Brother Lowdown - "Guitar Shaped Swimming Pool"
Soft - "Droppin"

You can grab the mp3 here But you should RSS feed

Voxtrot group pictureVoxtrot - The Start of Something

From their debut EP, Raised by Wolves, which is available on Magic Marker Records.

This band is a De-Fi Radio favorite so you MUST buy the album. Plus they're kicking off a new tour December 2 in Dallas, Texas. Visit their website, Voxtrot.net for the ocmplete tour schedule and to buy the EP and maybe grab a t-shirt.

UPDATE Dec. 2, 2005: I got my facts wrong. Magic Marker Records released the 7-inch single "Raised by Wolves." The actual EP cd was released on the band's own label, Cult Hero. Many many thanks to Young Poisoner for catching my mistake! =)
See the light album coverUnder Electric Light - "Never See the Light"

Working hard on new material, this comes from those all night, sleep-deprived sessions. A testatment to how talented this band is and how their new CD deserves a place in your player. I know I can't wait to get my hands on the new one. Until then, visit their website or their MySpace site (myspace.com/underelectriclite) and let them know they rock.
Which Side Are You On CD coverBrother Lowdown - "Guitar Shaped Swimming Pool"

On September 27, 2005 Brother Lowdown's first full length album, Who's Side are You On?, was released, and all we can say is "FINALLY!" You can get it, and two t-shirts, from the Store section of their website, BrotherLowdown.com.

You can listen to three of the tracks from the CD at the Music section of their site. Go listen and then buy a shirt or CD. =)
Picture of Soft bandSoft - "Droppin"

This song is track number 4 on their five song EP, which you can buy here. How good is this CD? Well two songs from it have been played on KCRW, are currently in high rotation on AOL Radio's New Indie First channel, and is the number 4 best selling CD on Insound.com, an online CD store. How friggin cool is that? Excellent job! So lets try to get them to be the number one best seller, what do ya say? =)

I apologize for the crappy sounding me. I know you expect better and you deserve it. I left all my cables for my setup in California with Matt after the Portable Media Expo. Lucky for me he grabbed them and will be sending them to me shortly. But until then i have to use the crappy headset mic thingy. =( Please bare with me. It will not be like this forever, i promise!!

The Constantines - Love in Fear
Chad VanGaalen - Echo Train
Fruit Bats - Lives of Crime
The Changes - Her You and I
Lovespirals - Our Nights

Once again, 5 great songs!
Click the grey button above to get the mp3.
You can subscribe to the show by using the buttons on the left side of the site.

The Constantines - Love in Fear
From their brand new CD Tournament of Hearts comes my favorite Constantines track. These five guys form one of Canada's best exports and it shows. Just listen to the lyrics of "Love in Fear." A great beat throughout that will certainly have you nodding your head or tapping your feet.

Bryan Webb – vocals, guitar
Steve Lambke – vocals, guitar
Dallas Wehrle – bass guitar
Will Kidman – keyboards
Doug MacGregor - drums
Chad VanGaalen - Echo Train
This is the second track from Chad's Infiniheart album to make it onto De-Fi Radio. After hearing this track Brian swore he was buying this CD right now! =) You should too so head over to Sub Pop and pick it up. Or you can use this link. We try to make it easy for you. =)
The Fruit Bats - Lives of Crime
On their Spelled in Bones album. Give this track a listen then head on over to watch the video.
The Changes - Her You and I
On their First of May and Self-Titled EPs. Ben is in love with this band and has the self-titled EP. He keeps e-mailing me and calling me telling me how great this band is. While I believe him, its getting a little annoying. My suggestion is grab the cd here so Ben will leave you alone. And so you can hear some great new music.
LoveSpirals - Our Nights
Brian was introduced to this band in middle 2001 and loves the Windblown Kiss album, which is where this track comes from. I highly suggest you pick this CD up. Its mellow and soothing. Great music for dining with a special someone and for just listening to at any time.

Ryan Lum and Anji Bee have a podcast called Chillin with Lovesprials. They talk about all kinds of music things and the latest happenings in the Lovespirals world. The new CD called Free and Easy is the topic of their latest episode and Brian has ordered it. Highly recommended. Windblown Kiss is also a good place to start. =)

All day today the site has been up then down. Up then down. Neither www.defiradio.com or http://defiradio.libsyn.com would resolve the site.

And i'm having trouble with episode 19's uploading. Suffice it to say that the mp3 file is on the server but when i try to publish the post, LibSyn does not see it.

Please bare with me. The show has been ready for two days now but these problems have held it back. I apologize and have a work around. If things keep misbehaving, i'll apply a work around.

Thanks so much for understanding and for your patience!! =)

UPDATE October 25, 2005: So uhm, maybe it would help if i readthe news items after my log in to LibSyn. They were affected by Hurricane Wilma and having lived in Pensacola before and after Hurricane Ivan, i know that they are not having any fun. I apologize for my complaint. Ima lern tah reeeeed!!!

This episode's lineup: Wolf Parade - Shine A Light
Party Ben - Tegan and Sara vs. Mylo - Walking with a Ghost in Paris (its a mashup)
The Changes - When I Wake
Rosie Thomas - Pretty Dress
Holopaw - Cinders

Ben joins me again! And we find out he, made a picture of a color. We will be going to the Portable Media Expo and Podcast Convention 2005 in November so you should too! Great music, great cohost, cd giveaway winners, shout outs, it all makes for a great time!

Picture of Wolf ParadeWe kick things off with an import from Montreal called Wolf Parade. Their song, Shine a Light is on their forthcoming CD Apologies to the Queen Mary.

Apologies is set to be released on September 27 and you can order it now on Subpop Records.

The Canadian edition of Time magazine has picked this CD as one of "Canada's Most Anticipated Indie Albums of the Year." Pick it up before anyone else you know and you'll be the coolest kid on your block!! =)
Our second tune is a first here on De-Fi Radio. Its our first remix mashup. I too was very skeptical but by the end i really liked the song. Props to Party Ben for creating this mashup. Its called Tegan & Sara versus Mylo - "Walking with a Ghost in Paris" and will make you shake your <insert random saying or body part here>!
Picture of The ChangesThird up on this episode is a band from Chicago, Illinois, The Changes. This song, "When I Wake" is the first song from their seven-track, self-titled EP. "When I Wake" has a little bit of a 1980s, The Police, feel to it, but is modern rock. If you're not listening for it, you will completely miss the little nuances that are obvious throwbacks to good '80s music.

Don't let that reference confuse you, however, as their self-titled EP is less slammed-down your throat than some other recent, modern crunchy '80s rock and more great music. You can also check them out at their MySpace site to keep up on their tour dates and hear some more tracks.
Rosie ThomasOur fourth song this time around comes from Rosie Thomas. "Pretty Dress" is from her CD If Song Could Be Held that was released on September 13.

If Songs Could Be Held is Rosie's third full-length album during her time on Sub Pop Records and marks a different approach to her songs than before. Her voice just pulls you in and is haunting as well as soothing. Something you must hear for yourself to understand. Which is exactly why we are playing here in this episode. =)

"Pretty Dress" is a great entry point to a CD full of fresh, new takes on the "standard" topics of love, one's identity, and taking a hard look at one's ownself. Heavy!
And finally, we wrap up this installment of De-Fi Radio with Holopaw and their song "Cinders." Holopaw is named after a smaller town in Florida that none of the band members are from.

Holopaw currently hails from Gainesville, Florida and released their latest CD, Quit + ⁄ or Fight, just last month. However, "Cinders" comes from their Sub Pop Records debut album, Holopaw. Full of musical contradicitions, just as you get settled into something, it gets pulled out or drowned out, only to return once you were used to it being gone.

Don't forget, we'll be attending the Portable Media Expo 2005 in November as well as many other podcasters that you know and love. So make plans to be there and say hey!

Shout outs to Courtney, Monkey Pup and Music for Jerks, Daniel and each and every one of you!! We couldn't do this with out you!! And as always, thanks for subscribing, thanks for listening and stay tuned!

This episode's lineup:

Elevator Division - Radio
Old Canes - Taxi on Vermont
Extra Blue Kind - Make Yourself Useless
Chad VanGaalen - Clincally Dead
Iron and Wine - Lion's Mane

Once more, Ben Taylor (now called MoreBen) and I team up to bring you 5 great songs. And hopefully make you at least smile. =)

Elevator Division's Years CDElevator Division with their song "Radio".

This is the second track off of their 2004 CD, Years. Find out more about them at their Second Nature Recordings web page. You can even get their songs in the iTunes Music Store. Reminds me of Jeff Buckley, The Cure, and Coldplay and many many others.
Old Canes pictureOld Canes - "Taxi on Vermont"

From his CD Early Morning Hymns, "Taxi on Vermont" is Early Morning's second track. You can get the CD at Second Nature Recordings via their store. You can also get the CD via iTunes. Either way, the important message here is you can - and should - get the album in a format you prefer. =)
Elevator Division's Years CDextra blue kind - "Make Yourself Useless".

The title track from their new CD, The Tide and the Undertow is available from CDBaby.com as well as at their record label's site, Opulent Records, as MP3s.
Elevator Division's Years CDChad VanGaalen - "Clinically Dead."

From his latest CD, Infiniheart, "Clinically Dead" is the title track. And trust us. It only gets better from there.

You can also find out more about him at flemisheye.com
Iron and Wine CD coverIron & Wine - "Lions Mane."

Let me make one thing clear. If you do not own Sam Beam's The Creek Drank the Cradle you must go buy it now! Then pick up 2004's Our Endless Numbered Days.

Of course, the new EP, Woman King needs your attention as well. =)

Thanks so much for tuning in and we want to hear from you. Leave us feedback/comments here in the comments section. Or you can send us e-mail. The e-mail addresses are:
Ben's email address
Brian's e-mail address

And if you're a band wanting to submit, please go to library.musicpodcasting.org and submit it so you can get play on the Associatino of Music Podcasting shows.

Its finally out. After very luckily dodging the tremendously devistating Hurricane Katrina, i give you something to soothe the nerves. And to cure what ails you.

But first and foremost, why not go over to www.redcross.org and donate a few bucks to help those who are affected by the horrible destruction and chaos from Hurricane Katrina? Anything helps. =D

This time around we have a few familiar faces and some new (to De-Fi Radio) ones.

bill - Sound Scientist Picture of bill's CD coverYou might remember them from last episode with the slightly haunting Watercolors. Their first CD - so far it lacks a title - is being recorded right now. Keep checking their CDBaby page and thier Myspace site at www.myspace.com/bill to see when it is available.

They're playing at The Whistle Stop in San Diego, California September 2 at 11pm. $5 to get in there. And then you can catch them for free September 7, 7pm at the PB Bar and Grill.

Halloween, Alaska - Drowned Picture of Halloween Alaska's new CDFrom their new CD Too Tall to Hide coming out in September. This song has been released for podcast play FIRST. Even before radio stations get it!! That means you get to hear it first!! You're so ahead of the curve. =)

Find out more about Halloween Alaska at title="Halloween, Alaska's site">www.halloweenalaska.com and listen to some tracks over at their MySpace site, www.myspace.com/halloweenalaska

See Halloween, Alaska for free at at the second annual South Park Music Festival September 9 at 5pm. Or join them in their hometown on Spetember 10, 6pm at First Avenue in Minneapolis to help celebrate the release of their second disc, Too Tall to Hide.

Dylan in the Movies - August MoonPicture of DitM CD cover Another excellent track fro mthe forthcoming CD Feel the Pull.

46 Bliss - In a Long Time46 Bliss pictureFrom their second, self-titled CD, 46bliss blows away any prejudices you might have about pop music. Not your standard pop this trio pulls out all the stops on the subway from your ears to your brain. Speaking of subways, this band gets their name from "an obscure New York City subway stop."

Their music has been featured on many television shows, inlcuding Veronica Mars, Johnny Fox, and Joan of Arcadia.

To find out more, visit their website www.46bliss.com. You can buy their songs at mp3tunes.com or their albums at CDBaby.com

The Helio Sequence - Everyone Knows EveryonePicture of The Helio SequenceTrack 5 on their latest CD Love and Distance. The Helio Sequence has been on Accident Hash and Insomnia Radio before but i feel this song needs special attention. Especially since it is that back to school tim of year. Get their CDs over at

Veda - The Falling Kind Picture of Veda Veda (on Second Nature Recordings) was formed in 2004 in Kansas City, Missouri. This rock quartet has very dedicated underground following after only one year of existence. This just goes on to prove that dedication and hard work are the basis for becoming a successful band.

This track comes from their Weight of an Empty Room CD.

And thats going to do it for this episode of De-Fi Radio. Thanks to Courtney Dean for the background music you've been hearing and to Ben Taylor for the site redesign and for pointing me to Veda. Take care and stay tuned.

Tonight ,six (6) great songs from six (6) great artists! And the winners of The Transfer's 3 song EP. Howard Coates = Edward Coates - i goofed announcing the winners.

Clumsy - Fruitless Formed in 2001 with two E.P.s and countless shows all across the U.K., this Bristol, England group is not only amazing on the stage but off stage as well. During their spare time they teach, record, and mentor teenagers as part of the U.K.'s music scheme called REMIX. Their latest E.P. is called I Love My Pony.

bill - Watercolors Johnathan Coyle, Dave Marciano, andCurtis Hartling are long-time friends. One day in 2003 they decided to do something new in San Diego. Thats when they decided to form the group bill. With their straightforward approach to music, you get good, honest rock.

The Willis - They Have a Theory I believe these guys are the most played artist on De-Fi Radio. From their soon-to-be released CD "bathtub.lightbulb.heartattack" comes yet another gem. The rumor mill's buzz is the CD is due to hit October 15. Keep checking their website and their myspace.com site (www.myspace.com/thewillis for updates.

[August 22,2005]CORRECTION:

Brian, Steve from The Willis let me know you were playing a track from their forthcoming album "Bathtub, Lightbulb, Heartattack" on one of your podcasts recently. I was wondering if you could make a slight change to your posting. The album is not coming out until Jan ‘06.
There you have it. Straight from the record label. Thanks for the correction, Mike. =)

Brother Love - Summertime Great up-beat rock and that wants one thing: Your butt to start moving! Brother Love has been all over the podosphere and here is yourchanceto catch him again! =) Playing Martha's Vineyard in August so try to catch a show if you're in the area. Buy his CD, "Album of the Year" over at CDBaby.com or in iTunes

Dylan in the Movies - Momentary Breakdown Dylan In The Movies is the musical vehicle for Boston-based singer/songwriter Brian Sullivan. Reminiscent of long satisfying drives, Dylan In The Movies blend beautiful melodies with orchestral arrangements with transcendent heights and gloaming dips that rival current day surrealist rockers. Give them a listen at www.myspace.com/dylaninthemovies

Halloween, Alaska - Call it Clear From their self-titled debut album that was first released in 2003 comes this hipnotizing song. Fans of Fox's The O.C. might recognize two tracks on that album, "Des Moines" and "All the Arms Around You." I felt that "Call it Clear" needed some attention as well. =) Plus you have a chance to win this CD! I have two copies to give away courtesy of (the record company) and ! Huge thanks to Michele Delfino, Halloween, Alaska, and the entire East Side Label Group! You can hear more at their Myspace site: www.myspace.com/halloweenalaska.

The Association of Music Podcasting (AMP), of which I’m a member, has raised a very interesting issue concerning Apple's iTunes supporting podcasts.

Basically 34 out of 43 AMP shows are NOT listed in the iTunes directory. We all have been submitted and where either in the directory at one time and then removed, or have yet to show up three weeks after iTunes was launched. Have you had issues with your listing in iTunes, including long lag times? Is your music podcast listed? Is your music podcast actually listed as an Audio Blog? Can you explain why these problems would exist with a company as adept at technology as Apple?

Read AMP’s press release from this morning. If you feel the theme of the release applies to your podcast, let Apple know, or leave comments here.

Is Apple Thwarting Independent Music Podcasters?

Despite the widespread proliferation of podcasts through Apple’s new iTunes version 4.9, it appears music podcasters that legally distribute independent music are being left behind and effectively locked out of the iTunes podcast directory, which is fast becoming the primary vehicle to find podcasts.

The Association of Music Podcasting (AMP) represents the largest podcasting content group in the world, with forty three members. As of this release, three weeks after the delivery of the latest version of iTunes, thirty four AMP podcast feeds remained unlisted in the iTunes directory. These podcasts were subsequently either listed in the iPodder.org directory that served as the initial basis for the iTunes client ,or were submitted within twenty-four hours of the iTunes release.

It appears Apple has placed procedural obstacles for many older, established podcasts to quickly enter its iTunes directory. Despite that brand new podcast submissions appear to be taking a reasonable amount of processing time (approximately 48 hours), many legacy podcasters have waited weeks without a presence on iTunes.

Moreover, podcasts taken from the original iPodder.org listing are barred from resubmission, with no available option to resolve the issue of podcasts “on hold.

“It’s frustrating, says Chris MacDonald, owner of IndieFeed Podcasts, founding member and Director of Legal Affairs at AMP. “We’ve been podcasting since mid September of 2004, when this thing really got started. I have thousands and thousands of listeners; yet our fans can’t migrate to iTunes easily. We are losing loyal listeners who aren’t technically savvy or who choose not to run two podcast aggregators at a time. It’s silly to suggest Apple can’t add those feeds to their directory in a reasonable amount of time. It’s also odd that my non-music feeds, which were provided to Apple at the same time, migrated to the iTunes directory in only two days.

“Corporations are looking to take advantage of the roadwork that the existing podcasting community has created via an unfettered, open-choice format, says Derrick Oien, President of AMP. Oien is one of the earliest legal music podcasters, going back to the fall of 2004. His show is among many not yet listed in the iTunes directory. Oien adds, “It appears that Apple is more concerned with molding the community to their immediate commercial needs than with embracing this open community and adhering to an effective long term strategy. We have witnessed the early evolution of podcasting at a break-neck pace; partly because podcasting’s open format rapidly adapts to fit the needs of the community at large. Successful corporations will embrace rather than attempt to control this phenomenon. AMP continues to rapidly amass a large and dedicated collective audience, and we are working with people and organizations that approach podcasting in the spirit in which it was conceived. We look forward to working with them. At some point we expect that the support we receive daily from listeners and artists will get Apple’s attention.

About the Association of Music Podcasting

AMP was formed in January 2005 to unite podcasters who play legally available independent music. AMP DJs are music lovers who have access to great, mostly independent music that you probably haven’t heard of (yet). AMP provides a fresh alternative, and it’s all legal and safe to download. AMP members operate their own unique podcast shows.

Thats right, De-Fi Radio #11 is live!

Get the mp3. But really, get the RSS feed to never miss a beat.

As always, please leave comments hear or at the e-mail address - E-mail address. Especially since this show has a little more talking in it. Courtney and i had a little bit of banter going on there. So please let me know what you think. Even if it is negative. =) This show is for you!

Hurricane Dennis forced me to flee to Birmingham, Alabama. But you get to reap the benefits. I stayed with my buddy Courtney and got to see a bit of the town.

Our first night there, we went to a great live show at a place called The Nick. Three (3) extremely talented bands took the stage and WOW! You get to hear two of them on this episode! =)

Plus i have a new setup, my first co-host, a little different format, and great new music! Ready for the show notes?

Like we mention in the show, let us know what you think of the new format. Hate it? Cuss me out in the comments or e-mail. Love it? Send me a tip by clicking on the image on the left. Indifferent? Listen to some past shows.

I can't say it enough so thanks for listening. Stay tuned!

Here it is!! The Top 10 At 10! It took for friggin' ever, i know. But its well worth it i promise.

Get the mp3 file but you should really subscribe using the RSS feed

Why is it worth it? Well funny you should ask! So much less of me going "Ilove that band. They're great" and more music to rock your eardrums.

It was recorded using my crappy mic but this episode we bid farewell to the Altec Lansing AHS-202. It served me well to get started but its just a cheap mic headset combo. I got it at Target for USD$10.

For show 11 we'll have a new setup! I'm super stoked about my new microphone and stuff but i'll share it all later. For now, show notes!

  • Coming in at number 10, Good Night City - Move On
First aired on De-Fi Radio #7.
  • At number 9 we have Ghotti - She Said
A song from the forthcoming album, shows they're versatility.
  • Stephen Kelly has a great acoustic sound that anyone will instantly enjoy. His song Muck Mosey clocks in at the number 8 spot.
  • Boston gives us our number 7 on the Top 10 At 10. Home to baked beans, C.C. Chapman, the Boston Red Sox, and Averi and just wonderful music as a rule, from the album Drawn to Revolving Doors, For Better or Worse
  • From the album Under A Killer Blue Sky by Jupiter Sunrise comes our number 6 song, Kaye. They're on the Warped Tour this summer, so go see them in the MySpace.com tent. Good times for sure.
  • Number 5 comes to use from Redwood, California courtesy of Mr. Ronnie Day. This song is called Outside.
  • Of course we all remember Ghotti. Would could forget them after this song - number 4 in our countdown - Sunflowers?
  • Tied at the number 2 spot are The Transfer - Down With Everything and Apollo 13 - Hero. Put these two songs in a cage match, let them duke it out and who comes out a winner? You do, my dear listener. You do. =)
  • And coming in at NUMBER 1..... Arkitekt with a song that i like to think of as the theme song for podcasting, Most of Us. You can find it on their "What Makes Your World Go Around" cd.

The ending song is Hot Hot Heat's Get In or Get Out from the Make Up the Breakdown CD. I got it from SubPop's Media section.

Thanks so much for tuning in! The new site is just getting started and once it is up, i'll let you know. Go ahead and bookmark www.defiradio.com so you will be prepared when i move it over.

See you soon for show 11. Congrats to the two winners of the Apollo 13 CD giveaway contest! They were Bob Battams and Ken Kozlowski. I've sent you two an e-mail and once i have a mailing address, you'll get the CDs. And all of you U.S. listeners, have a safe 4th of July!

More great music tonight. And great news!!!

Get the mp3.
But you should really subscribe.

First off, a killer red wine that i found at Target. It is a Merlot by Papio Wines. It was excellent. A smoother merlot, with great blackberry flavor and full-bodied. And the best part was it was only US $6! It was better than most US $25 and up wines i have had! I highly recommend it. And Papio Wines, if you're reading/listening, maybe we can talk sponsorship? =D

Now, on with the music!

  • The Willis - We Are
Picture of the willisRemember their song Jimmy Fallon from last show?

Well they're back with another great song. I dig this band and so should you! =)

  • Minus 200 - Boiling Over

Picture of Minus 200 Minus 200 began as a trio of brothers, Bree Beal on bass and lead vocals, Rane Beal on guitar and back up vocals, and Ty Beal on drums. In early 2002, the band acquired Kaelie Retts on electric violin and began wowing audiences at venues in the Phoenix area such as The Venue of Scottsdale, Bash on Ash, Hard Rock Café and Alice Cooper’s Town.

In August of 2004 the band joined forces with bass player Stephen Sinek (formerly of Dtailz) and released their self titled EP (engineered by Danny Wright- Maroon 5, Death Row Records). Since that time, their music has received critical acclaim and international success through internet radio and MP3 sites such as Purevolume.com, umn.com and ic-musicmedia.com as well as through high record sales and local radio airplay.

Song is from their 6 song EP with the music video for "Boiling Over." You can pick it up for US$7.25 at Interpunk so go do it now!

  • The Transfer - How Hazardous We Are

Pic of The TransferRemember them from last show with their song "Down With Everything"? Well i couldn't get enough of them so here is a new one.

Don't forget that the new CD Romantics & Addicts is available June 7! You better buy a copy!! They are amzing rock from Detroit, Michigan and deserve your dollars! =D
  • The Mod-est Lads - Sputnik Spy From Outer Space

I just can't stop myself from moving to the Bladderpool, UK beat. I'm wearing out their CD in my CD player. Its so great! I love the funny 1960s rock sound. It sounds that the band is having fun with it so even better! =D
  • Apollo 13 - Hero
Picture of Apollo 13What more can i say about this award winning band? I think their site says it all.

Stay tuned to the end of the show. I'm doing a CD giveaway where you can win Apollo 13's Brave New World CD!. More details are in the show so make sure you listen! =D

And go to apollothirteen.com to get their CD Brave New World. You will be more than amazed, i promise.
  • Stillman - Born for Show

The creative outlet of one man – Chaz Craik. Not only can he produce, but he is also an amazing musician. All of the instrumentation is his own, except for the drums. Chaz had a rising alt-country star Lucky Jim lay down the beats on the pagan skins.

First and foremost a bass player, Chaz has an uncanny ability to to understand how songs fit together. And from the tracks on the Weightless EP, you can really tell that this producer meets songwriter meets musician is going to be well on his way.
  • Buffalo Song - Glorious Tonight
Picture of Buffalo SonThis song comes from his When The Clouds Grew Roots CD.

Buffalo Son is Blake Woessner. These songs are his vision of “songs from the porch swing.

Blake is the son of a Blues-harmonica father and an artist mother who raised him in California. Soon after they would move to New York City where Blake would begin playing dark taverns and bright bonfires. These gigs soon paid off in the form of better gigs on rooftops, in bars, and a weekly appearance in a café in Brooklyn.

Writing most of his music on a fire-escape while staring up at the New York sky, vocal melodies remain the “skin and bones of his songs.

Buffalo Son, from California to the New York Islands has lived and felt what it is to be human. Now he wants to sing about it. Listen up.

So the two Buffalo Son CDs you need to get:

Finally!! =D After a few minor setbacks, show #8 is now up! What a ride it was to get it live. But now, here it is.

Tonight's lineup is impressive. So is the amount of wine i comsumed. While not mentioned in the show anywhere, i was sampling two reds and a champagne. First, the reds:

  • Red Bicyclette's 2001 Petite Syrah. If you like Shiraz, you'll dig this wine. And it was only US $9! =)
  • From the people that brought you G|E|N|E|S|I|S comes Red Bud Shiraz. It was US $6 and almost the best shiraz i have ever had
As for the Champagne, it was Freixenet Brut.

Ok, now that the wine and cheese course is over with, lets get to the music:

  • The Transfer - Down With Everything Picture of The Transfer The Transfer is:
    Steve Tutor - Vocals
    Justin Carls - Guitar
    Ted Krisko - Guitar
    Chris Larson - Bass
    Steve Poirier - Drums

From Detroit, Michigan, their sound combines highly technical guitar and bass riffs with pounded and rocked out drums. Songwriting is influenced by the best of the 1990s post-hardcore groups and has an artistic feel. Having met local music producers and personalities Bill Kozy (Cheap Trick, Lit, The Suicide Machines, D12, Eminem, Five Horse Johnson) and Tim Patalan (The Fags, Sponge, Fretblanket, Local H) at "The Loft" in Saline Michigan, The Transfer began cutting demos in 2004. Their album, "Romantics and Addicts" is due out June 7, 2005. Pick up a copy for US $12 at www.thetransfer.com

  • Ghotti - She Said From their soon-to-be-released album, Ghotti gives us more great rock with their song "She Said." I personally can not wait to hear the CD once it is finished. Stayed tuned for the release date.

  • 2 Cubic Feet - My Own Reflection Still no word on when their official website will be back up but thats ok. I still dig the tracks they have at purvolume. =)

  • Averi - For Better or Worse I am still blown away by this CD. It helped get me through a little trouble spot i had this past week. =) Don't you love it when music can help you do that?

  • The Mod-est Lads - She Could Be in the Beatles From their Trouser Load of Love CD (the only five songs known to have been recorded by The Mod-est Lads) "She Could Be in the Beatles" is a great example of the catchy, hip-shaking beats and light-hearted, fun lyrics.

Depending on who you talk to determines which version of The Mod-est Lads' history you will get. Some say they were the hottest thing out of Bladderpool, England in 1966. Destined for superstardom they just disappeared.

Others (i.e., crackpots and cospiracy theorists) say that they are eccentric sausage ranchers from Iowa who grew tired of creating elaborate crop circle hoaxes and decided to pass themselves off as long lost rock and roll sensations from Bladderpool. You decide.

  • The Clarkes - Face To the Ground Not much is known about this group other than they can play some good music! =) As soon as i know more, you will know more. Deal?

  • The Willis - Jimmy Fallon Picture of The Willis
Oshkosh's The Willis' pop-inflected sound is complimented by diverse textures, unconventional instruments (trash can lids for example), resisting sonic, tonal, and rhythmic conventions with arrangements that don't sacrifice rock. The Willis' forthcoming album bathtub.lightbulb.heartattack promises to be an adventure in the sonic realm.

  • Hera Crush - Shout First off i accidentally said that Tears for Fears originally did this song. Now i know i'll get flamed and am sorry. I wasn't thinking straight. I was inebriated.

Second, Hera Crush is a band obsessed with contrasts. We like to move from beautiful, fragile melody to vicious, squalling noise. Lots of bands write good songs, and we like many of them, famous and non-famous. But not many go either as quiet or as loud as they do. And even fewer promise a love child conceived in a brief coming together of Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke and Layne Staley singing over a wall of sound that veers between gentle, Smiths-like calm to schizophrenic "oh dear, the Pumpkins and Rage are fighting again" carnage.

I am so sorry that is has been 13 days since the last show. I had some personal things come up that almost prevented me from checking e-mail! But its here with 9 soon to follow! So lets keep rocking and thanks for your patience! =D
